A Momentous Beginning at the Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine

“There’s something truly special about reflecting on the early days of the Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine. One memory that stands out is the very first event we held – just before our doors officially opened. We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests from The World cruise liner to our kitchen and dining room, where we shared not just a meal but the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s culinary culture.”

The First Event at Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine
Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine had yet to officially launch, but I was thrilled to host this preview for a small, exclusive group. It was an intimate gathering, full of warmth, discovery, and celebration of South Africa’s culinary heritage. From the very beginning, my vision was clear: to create a space that goes beyond cooking, where local ingredients and cultural traditions are cherished and elevated. This was a chance to introduce our visitors to the vibrant flavours and deep-rooted traditions of KZN cuisine, a mission that lies at the very core of our school.
A Visitor’s Perspective: Richard Edwards’ Reflections
Richard Edwards, a professional photographer and travel enthusiast, was among those special guests, and he documented his experience in a series of blog posts. His first post, "Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine, Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa", captures the magic of that day and our shared passion for local food and community. Richard writes of his privilege to be part of our very first cooking demonstration, where he witnessed firsthand the dedication, love, and skill poured into each dish. He appreciated not only the flavours but also the philosophy behind them: a commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a deep respect for South African culinary heritage.
Richard’s words perfectly encapsulate the spirit of that event and remind me of why I embarked on this journey. To read more of Richard’s reflections on this unforgettable experience, visit his blog: Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine, Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa:
Why This Visit Matters to Our School’s History
This inaugural gathering laid the foundation for what the Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine would become. It reinforced my commitment to creating a school that not only educates but also preserves and celebrates the culinary traditions of South Africa. I’m grateful to Richard for capturing those early moments, and it brings me joy to share his perspective with our community.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Stay tuned for more stories that honor our school’s past, celebrate its present, and look forward to its future.
