This recipe is a staple in my home. Growing up in a big family, food has always been our love language. This pizza recipe has brought endless amounts of joy and comfort. Learning what you can do with the basic house hold necessities is so important. They go a long way, feed many tummies and plus it’s delicious.

Created by student chef Alexis-Jayde Van Wyk, this homemade pizza recipe is a comforting family favourite made with simple household ingredients. With a soft homemade dough, tomato paste, mozzarella, mushrooms, bacon and fresh basil, it serves eight portions across two trays and celebrates food as a love language.

A RUSTIC Homemade Pizza Recipe from Student Chef Alexis-Jayde Van Wyk

Yields: 8 portions (2 trays)

DOUGH INGREDIENTS

  • 560g Champagne Valley flour

  • 3ml Oryx salt

  • 15 ml Sugar

  • 10g Instant dry yeast

  • 30ml Cooking oil

  • 400ml Lukewarm water

TOPPINGS ingredients:

  • 1x 50g Tomato paste sachet

  • 250g Mozzarella cheese

  • 200g Mushrooms (sliced)

  • 250g Diced bacon

  • Pinch of Oryx salt (to season)

  • Fresh basil leaves (garnish)

Method:

  1. Spray and cook, baking tray, rolling pin, large bowl, measuring spoons and cups.

  2. Sift flour and salt together. Add sugar and yeast.

  3. Combine oil and lukewarm water, add to flour mixture and mix to a soft dough.

  4. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic.

  5. Preheat oven to 180°c, spray a baking tray with spray and cook then roll out dough and place in the baking tray. Ensure it is smooth and not bumpy.

  6. Add tomato paste onto dough (spread evenly), grated cheese, sliced mushrooms, bacon diced into small cubes and a pinch of salt.

  7. Place in the oven at 180°c for 20 minutes the dough should look slightly golden brown on the edges. Then cut into even squares.

  8. Place a single slice of pizza onto a serving plate.

  9. Garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve warm.
