The Winery of Good Hope

The Winery of Good Hope

The Winery of Good Hope was founded in 1998 by two international wine producers, Ben Radford & Alex Dale, who had settled in Stellenbosch after the end of Apartheid. Ben Radford grew-up in the Barossa Valley (Australia) and Alex Dale in Burgundy (France). The first wines bore the name of these founders and thus RADFORD DALE was created.

We are the 5th generation on the farm with 200 ha, where of 80 ha is planted for vines. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinotage for red wines and Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier for the whites.

The main soil type is koffiee klip – (coffee stone) – which is granite with shale and clay. This soil is very good for especially Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc, granite gives fantastic bone structure, the shale give a lot of finesse and elegance.

Our focus is for the white wines Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay and for red wines Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Shiraz blends.

We have three different ranges – Radford Dale is our founders range and premium range, Vinum our middle range and The Winery of Good Hope, our entry level range.

Our yearly production is 45 000 cases by 12.

The Winery of Good Hope PTY Ltd owns no vineyards. Its shareholders, however, in their personal capacities, own many hundreds of hectares of vines between them, in various locations. The model we set in place from day one was not to tie ourselves to one location and thus not to limit our ability to work with the best geologies and micro-climates in the Cape. We wanted to be free to pursue the finest vineyard sites and not to make a winemaker-driven range from just one spot.

Our main vineyard partner owns the magnificent farm on the Helderberg where we are based (manor house pictured to the left), overlooking False Bay and located directly on the R44, mid-way between Stellenbosch and the Ocean. This property comprises over 200 hectares of vineyards, plus our Winery, our barrel cellars, our Warehouse, our bottling facility and our HQ. We vinify, mature and bottle all our wines here.

This is the heart of The Winery of Good Hope and provides us with an ideal home in the epicenter of Stellenbosch’s finest site.

We welcome visits by appointment and intend building a tasting facility in 2012.
